How Zoned HVAC Improves Comfort and Gets Rid of Cold Spots

by Daniel Estevao on November 12, 2016

ductless mini-split unit - hvac zoning solutionsIs the temperature perfect in the bedroom but freezing in the living room?

Here are some common causes for hot and cold spots in the home:

  • Most homes have multiple floors, and as we know, heat rises. This tends to make the upper levels warmer than the lower levels.
  • In rooms with a lot of sun-facing windows, the temperature will be much higher than other rooms in the home.
  • Larger rooms tend to require more heating and cooling than other parts of the home. The same applies to rooms with high ceilings.
  • Many rooms in the home get very little use. Most homes have one or two rooms that are used for storage or are only occupied a few times a week.

If you have a problem with hot and cold spots at home, it may be time to consider HVAC zoning solutions.

Zoned HVAC

These systems have separate thermostats that allow you to control the temperature in specific zones of the home. Many can be controlled via your smartphone.

There are two main types of zoned HVAC solutions. One is a ductless mini-split unit that doesn’t have utilize any ducts at all. You may have used this type of HVAC system in hotel rooms. These are good for add-ons and homes with shoddy or missing ductwork.

The other zoned HVAC system uses thermostats and sensors to trigger dampers in the ductwork that direct the conditioned air where it is summoned. You can also replace your entire ducted HVAC system for multiple ductless mini-split units, which are connected to a heat pump outdoors, but have no ducts. They usually look like white rectangular boxes mounted high on the ceiling.

Whichever zoned HVAC system you choose, by separating your home into different zones, you now have control over the delivery of hot or cold air to the areas where you want it most. If you wanted the bedroom to be a certain temperature, you would be able to set the thermostat for tat desired temperature without affecting other areas of the home.

This is a great solution for people who spend most of their days and nights in just one area of the home. If you work from home, you may spend the whole day in the office or den, but when you adjust the thermostat, you are heating (or cooling) the whole home.

And at night, that same stay-at-home worker goes to bed at night and has to heat or cool the entire home. The simple fact of the matter is that most of us only use a couple rooms of our homes for long periods of time.

Home zoning controls are also very useful for households that have different temperature and comfort preferences. You can choose to have one bedroom or living space one temperature for one person and a different area of the home set for a different temperature. This pleases the whole family.

Here are some additional reasons why you might want to invest in a home zoning system:

  • Custom temperatures for predetermined zones in the home.
  • Even air distribution and the ability to close off airflow to unoccupied areas of the home.
  • The system works for both heating and cooling systems, and when used strategically can save you hundreds of dollars every year on your heating and cooling bill.
  • Adding zones to the home maximizes the whole household’s comfort.
  • Temperature variations and hot/cold spots will disappear and you will save a lot money and energy.
