Why is NATE Certification Important? | HVAC Technician Excellence

by vscontent on September 23, 2016

the importance of NATE technicians - Puget Sound HVACThe North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification is the clearest sign that you are working with a professional HVAC technician. NATE is a nonprofit that requires rigorous training for aspiring HVAC technicians across North America.

Since HVAC systems require a large amount of technical and mechanical expertise, NATE’s standards are stringent and requires ongoing testing every couple of years to uphold the certification.

In addition to the regular NATE certification (for those who have worked in HVAC for at least 6-12 months), there are also professional level certifications (for those with 2+ years of experience):

  • Air Conditioning (AC) (Service exam also available in Spanish)
  • Air Distribution (AD)
  • Heat Pumps (Air-to-Air) (HP) (Service exam also available in Spanish)
  • Gas Heating (GS) (Service exam also available in Spanish)
  • Oil Heating (OL)
  • Hydronics Gas (HG) (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (HO) (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (LC) (service only)
  • Commercial Refrigeration (RC) (service only)
  • HVAC Efficiency Analyst (Senior Level) (EA)

Unfortunately, we all have to deal with incompetence every day. The home service business is no exception. In order to avoid the high amount of incompetence in the HVAC industry, homeowners should always look for NATE-certified technicians to conduct HVAC repairs and installations in their home.

Studies have shown that NATE-certified technicians are better at customer service and experience far fewer callbacks than their non-certified peers. Surveys of NATE-certified and uncertified technicians also revealed:

  • NATE-certified technicians generate less warranty expense
  • NATE-certified technicians are more experienced
  • NATE-certified technicians are higher paid
  • NATE-certified technicians are more likely to be highly valued by employers

According to ENERGY STAR, over half of all new HVAC system are improperly installed. This can cause huge inefficiencies and void any manufacturer warranties that you may have. If a NATE-certified contractor installs your new unit, however, you can be sure that all your warranties will remain in good standing.

A NATE technician is also trained to walk the homeowner through all of their options and explain to them how to properly take care of their HVAC systems.

The manufacturers of expensive and complicated equipment such as central air and heating units know the importance of a good contractor. If your new unit is not installed according to the guidelines set forth by NATE and other governing bodies, you could risk getting any help when your unit fails.

Benefits of a NATE Technician:

  • Increased energy efficiency.
  • Better customer service.
  • Peace of mind that warranties remain in effect.
  • Important how-to information is conveyed to the homeowner.
  • More likely to spot issues that could lead to expensive repairs down the road.
  • More likely to spot and correct safety hazards, such as combustion leaks.
