Heat Pump Repair and Troubleshooting
Heat pumps may operate as standalone systems or work alongside a furnace in dual-fuel setups, providing efficient year-round comfort. Like any mechanical system, they can develop problems over time. When something is off, our certified technicians follow a systematic process to diagnose the issue accurately, make quality repairs, and restore reliable performance without shortcuts or guesswork.
First, here are a few simple, safe checks a homeowner can try.
Heat Pump Checks
1) Check the thermostat
-
Confirm it is set to Heat or Cool (not Off).
-
Set the temperature 3–5 degrees above or below the current indoor temperature to trigger a call.
-
If the screen is blank, check batteries (if applicable) and look for a tripped breaker.
If your thermostat is blank, your system keeps tripping the breaker, or you suspect a blown fuse, see our guide to common heat pump electrical problems.
2) Check the air filter
-
A clogged filter can reduce airflow, cause comfort issues, and contribute to icing. Replace it if it looks dirty.
-
3) Check the outdoor unit
-
Make sure it is free of leaves, debris, or anything blocking airflow.
-
Some frost in winter is normal. A fully iced-over unit should be inspected.
4) Listen for the outdoor fan
-
If the system is calling but the fan is not running at all, make note of it before calling.
Common Heat Pump Problems and What They Usually Mean
System Not Heating or Cooling Properly
If your heat pump cannot keep up with your desired temperature, the issue may be related to low refrigerant levels, a failing reversing valve, airflow problems, or sensor issues. We identify the root cause and restore balanced, efficient comfort.
Ice Buildup on the Outdoor Unit
Some frost in winter is normal, but heavy ice or a frozen unit can signal defrost cycle issues, airflow restrictions, or refrigerant problems. Our team will clear the buildup, correct the underlying cause, and confirm the system runs properly in cold weather.
Blower Not Circulating Air
If the system turns on but airflow is weak or nonexistent, a clogged filter, worn blower motor, failed capacitor, or electrical issue may be to blame. We restore airflow so your home heats and cools evenly.
Short Cycling or Frequent Shutdowns
If your heat pump starts and stops too often, it could stem from thermostat issues, airflow restrictions, pressure imbalances, or electrical faults. We correct the issue to improve comfort and protect your system from further strain.
Unusual Noises or Vibrations
Buzzing, rattling, grinding, or loud humming can indicate loose components, motor issues, electrical problems, or refrigerant-related concerns. We pinpoint the source and make the necessary repairs to keep your system running quietly and efficiently.
