Puyallup Hybrid Heat Pump Installation: Trane Heat Pump and Furnace Upgrade

Puyallup hybrid heat pump installation before and after, old furnace replaced with a new Trane gas furnace in the garage

Pacific Heating & Cooling completed a Puyallup hybrid heat pump installation, replacing a nearly 20-year-old gas furnace that had stopped working and its paired heat pump with a new Trane heat pump, gas furnace, and smart thermostat that share the work for steady, efficient comfort in every season.

Project Overview

  • Location: Puyallup, WA 98375
  • Home Type: Single-family home built in 2002, heating equipment in the garage
  • System Type: Hybrid heating and cooling: heat pump paired with a gas furnace
  • Completion Date: September 29, 2026
  • Lead Technician: Brent White
  • Prior System: American Standard gas furnace, about 19 years old, paired with a heat pump about 7 years old

The Challenge

Karen’s family had already been enjoying the benefits of a hybrid setup: a heat pump outside and a gas furnace in the garage working as a team. But in mid-September, the furnace stopped working. At about 19 years old, it was well past the point where a repair made sense.

As longtime Peace of Mind Club members, the family called Pacific. Our comfort advisor, TJ Tedesco, walked them through their options with clear, upfront pricing. They chose to replace both the furnace and the heat pump so the whole system would be new, matched, and covered by one warranty. The family wanted:

  • Reliable heat back in the house before the cold, wet months arrived
  • A like-for-like hybrid system, so they kept the comfort and efficiency they were used to
  • New equipment that fit the existing garage space and filter setup without a major remodel
  • A smarter thermostat that could decide when to use the heat pump and when to use the furnace
  • Clear answers on a big investment, with no pressure and no surprises

Our Solution

New Trane heat pump outdoor unit installed on a pad at a Puyallup home as part of a hybrid heating system

The new Trane heat pump handles cooling in summer and most of the heating on mild days.

Pacific installed a complete Trane hybrid system in a single day. A new Trane heat pump now sits outside on a level pad. It cools the home in summer and handles most of the heating on mild fall and spring days. A new Trane S Series gas furnace went into the same garage spot as the old one and steps in when outdoor temperatures drop.

Our NATE-certified crew ran a new refrigerant line through the crawl space and installed a new matched indoor coil. They also added a new outdoor electrical disconnect, mounted the condensate pump off the floor, and kept the home’s existing 4-inch media filter setup. A Honeywell smart thermostat with a wireless outdoor sensor ties it all together. It reads the outdoor temperature and picks the right heat source automatically.

As with every installation, Pacific handled the permits, inspections, and equipment registration, so the family did not have to.

Equipment List

  • Heat Pump: Trane XR14 Heat Pump (5TWR4030), 2.5-ton, up to 14 SEER and 8.2 HSPF
  • Gas Furnace: Trane S Series Gas Furnace (S8X2B060M4), two-stage with ECM blower, up to 80% AFUE
  • Indoor Coil: Trane 5PXCBD04 matched coil, designed for R-454B refrigerant
  • Thermostat: Honeywell ElitePRO S1200 Smart Thermostat with equipment interface module
  • Outdoor Sensor: Honeywell RedLINK 3.0 wireless outdoor temperature and humidity sensor
  • Refrigerant Line Set: New 50-foot copper line set routed through the crawl space

Performance and Comfort Benefits

  • Dependable heat restored before the heating season, with a furnace ready for the coldest nights
  • Lower-cost heat on mild days, since the heat pump does most of the work when it is cool but not freezing
  • Steadier, quieter warmth, because the new furnace can run on a gentle low setting most of the time
  • Summer cooling from the same heat pump, with no separate air conditioner needed
  • Automatic switching between heat sources, so the family never has to think about it
  • A matched indoor and outdoor system built to work together for years to come

★★★★★

From quote to install, Pacific Heating did an amazing job. It’s a lot of money for new HVAC, but they made us feel comfortable in our decision answering all our questions. Installers went over and above, very professional! I recommend this company if you want good quality work!

Why This Matters for Puyallup Homeowners

A Puyallup hybrid heat pump installation pairs an efficient heat pump with a gas furnace backup. The heat pump covers cooling and most mild-weather heating, and the furnace takes over on cold nights. For Puyallup homes that already have gas, it is a practical way to get reliable comfort without giving up the furnace.

Western Washington’s marine climate means long stretches of cool, damp weather rather than deep freezes. That is the kind of weather where a heat pump does its best work. Many South Hill homes built in the late 1990s and early 2000s are now reaching the age where original furnaces start to fail, just like this one.

Based on our service records, Pacific completed 138 full heating and cooling system installations in Puyallup over the past two years. Locally and family owned since 1984, we offer 2-hour arrival windows and walk every family through their options before any work begins.
